Cartoon Network nixes sexy ‘Powerpuff Girls’ cover

Cartoon Network has nixed a special cover for next month’s Powerpuff Girls comic, based on their hit children’s cartoon, for being too sexy. The cover by artist Mimi Yoon, was to be released as a variant collector’s cover for next month’s issue #6 from IDW. Public outcry stemmed from what was felt to be the sexualization of children’s characters in the cover image.

IDW vice-president of marketing Dirk Wood stated:

(The cover) was actually a Cartoon Network mandated cover, by an artist of their choosing. I think they were thinking of it more along the lines of ‘female empowerment’ than the kind of thing you guys are talking about, but certainly, we’re sensitive to the issues here. Half of the employees have kids here, and we pride ourselves in making comics they’ll enjoy and not give them a warped view of the world (except, you know, in a good way). Anyway, I certainly see your points, and we’ll be sensitive to these things, as I think we mostly have been.

Cartoon Network released a statement:

This particular variant cover for The Powerpuff Girls #6 from IDW was done in the artist’s signature style and was intended to be released as a collectible item for comic book fans. We recognize some fans’ reaction to the cover and, as such, will no longer be releasing it at comic book shops.”

Artist Mimi Yoon replied:

i’ve been keeping quiet because of my respect for the other parties involved, but i feel it’s about time i say something. DO KNOW THAT I AM DAMM PROUD OF THIS WORK OF MINE.

my objective was to illustrate modern, pop cultured, SASSY (not sexy), and humanized Powerpuff Girls who have just beaten the crime lord and have him on the ground. yes, the girls are wearing latex costumes… SO?!?!?! don’t all superpowered heroes wear latex?

unfortunately, the comic book will never make it to the stores… yes, i’m truely disappointed… because a perverted mind decided to see in this image what his dirty mind has conjured up, and barked loud enough. worse, he brought up kids and used protecting kids and kids’ perspective in his reasoning/excuse. does he think kids are dumber than him?

huge apologies to those who have been waiting… there’s nothing i can do. also sorry to those who’s been asking to buy prints of it… i’m not allowed to make prints of it. the characters belong to CN.
