On September 1, 2013, TrekMovie.com posted an editorial titled “Star Trek is broken – Here is how to fix it.” The article primarily focused on the latest entry in the Trek series, Star Trek Into Darkness. While Star Trek Into Darkness was a modest success, with Boxofficemojo.com posting the films latest earnings at $228,645,663, the film did not please Star Treks dedicated fan base.
In response to the criticisms leveled upon the film, the screenwriter, Roberto Orci, posted a response.
Yes, that’s right. The screenwriter of a major Hollywood motion picture,
co-creator of LOST, and producer of such hits as Cowboys vs. Aliens and Eagle Eye, responded to fans of the franchise. What did he have to say?
“I think the article above is akin to a child acting out against his parents. Makes it tough for some to listen, but since I am a loving parent, I read these comments without anger or resentment, no matter how misguided.
Having said that, two biggest Star Treks in a row with best reviews is hardly a description of “broken.” And frankly, your tone and attidude [sic] make it hard for me to listen to what might otherwise be decent notions to pursue in the future. As I love to say, there is a reason why I get to write the movies, and you don’t.”
Not satisfied with that, Mr. Orci continued his tirade,
“STID has infinetly [sic] more social commentary than Raiders in every Universe, and I say that with Harrison Ford being a friend. You lose credibility big time when you don’t honestly engage with the FUCKING WRITER OF THE MOVIE ASKING YOU AN HONEST QUESTION. You prove the cliche of shitty fans. And rude in the process. So, as Simon Pegg would say: FUCK OFF!”
Now the question fans are wondering is does Bob Orci not know how to spell? And if so, could that perhaps explain the lack of quality in his screenwriting? As someone who has read SAVE THE CAT, Mr. Orci’s playbook on how to write a screenplay, I do not recall the author, Blake Snyder, including a chapter on typos or being a dick.
